砂上の楼閣

ここ2, 3週間ほどは仕事も忙しくなってきて,
終電で帰宅することも少なくない.
それでいて朝は比較的早いので, 当然睡眠時間も十分にとれず,
慢性的に疲れが抜けきらない感じである.

昨日, 3連休の真ん中に休日出勤してしまった模範社員の当方は,
帰りに会社近くのマッサージ屋に立ち寄った.
この店のスタッフは全員中国人であるが, 腕前はそれほど悪くなく,
これまでも何度か足を運んだことのある割となじみの店である.
いつもは2, 30分の短いコースを選んでいたのだが,
今回は奮発して6000円も払って,
たっぷり１時間やってもらうことにした.
しかし, これが大きな間違いであった.

どうやら, 担当したスタッフは素人に毛の生えたような
新米だったのではないかと思っている.
研修医に難手術をまかせたようなもので,
ポイントを外していて大して気持ちよくなかった.
おまけに冷房があまり効いていなくて,
蒸し風呂のように暑く息苦しかった.
エアコンの作動している音ははっきりと聞こえるのだが...
途中からは「早く終わってくれ」とさえ思いはじめた.

I've been so busy for the last 2 or 3 weeks
that I sometimes take the last trains to get home.
And since I have to leave home early in the morning,
I can't get enough sleep and am tired all the time.

Yesterday I, who is dilligent to go to work
in the middle of 3 days off in a row,
dropped by the massagge store near my office on my way home.
The staffs are all Chinese and I know most of them have good skills
since I've been there several times.
Although I have always taken a short course for 20 or 30 minutes,
I decided to pay as much as 6,000 yen to take a full massage.
But this is my major fault.

Now I guess the staff assigned to me was nothing other than an amateur,
because she wasn't so good that I felt comfortable.
Plus, the room was hot like sauna, though I heard the air-conditioning work.
Gradually, I even began to hope the massage would be finished soon.

ギター用のアンプを買うため, 楽器屋を訪れた.
同じ価格帯でも様々な商品が並んでいたが,
初心者には違いが全くわからない.
売り場で迷っていると, ギター暦7年とかいう店員に絡まれた.
使い方から品質の違いに至るまで親切に説明してくれたが,
結局, 彼も自宅で実際に使っているという製品に決めた.
逆に言えば, 売り手が使いたくも無いような製品を
買い手が安心して使えるわけも無い.
自国産の野菜を決して口にせずに, 日本産の野菜を
高値で買い漁る金持ちの中国人の話を思い出す.

選んだアンプは思いのほか重量があったので帰りは苦労したが,
自宅に帰ってさっそくケーブルをつないで鳴らしてみると, 
いかにもエレクトリックギターらしい音が出せたので,
ちょっと感動した. 電子ドラム用のスピーカーとしても使えるので,
良い買い物をしたと思った.

I visited a music store to buy an amplifier for guitar,
Though there were a lot of products,
I was not so familier with them
that I could recognize the differences.
When I stood thinking about which one to get,
a clerk came to help me, who said he has played guitar for 7 years.
He was so courteous that he explained to me
from how to use an amplifier to their difference.
Finally I decided to purchase the product that he also use at his home.
I wondered if a buyer could like a product
that the seller wouldn't want to use?
This idea reminded me of rich Chinese who never eat
the toxic vegetable of their own country.

When I strum on the guitar connected to the amplifier at home,
I heard a good sound, the very one I believe of electric guitar,
which was worth having carried the heavy object for a long distance.
I also found I can use it for a speaker for electric drums.
I'd call it a good bargain.

先週ぐらいから, サーバマシン上で怪しげな
アプリケーションが勝手に起動するようになってしまった.
どうやら, WEBサイトを閲覧していた時に
うっかりスパイウェアをインストールしまったらしいので,
思い切ってOSごと再インストールし直した.
やはり, OSを最新の状態に更新するまでには時間がかかったが,
特に問題なくサーバを復旧できて, 一安心である.

Last week unknown applications began to boot
automatically on the server machine.
It seemed that I had installed some spyware accidentally
while browsing websites, so I reinstalled the OS,
Though it took a long time to update to the latest version,
I was relieved to restore the server with no problems.

マウスパッド無しで従来式のマウスを使い続けて
無用なストレスを感じていたので,　
遂にレーザー式の無線マウスを購入した.
木製の机の表面でも認識してくれる上に,
コードが絡まるのを気にする必要ももう無い.
思い切って4500円も出した甲斐があった.

I had been so bored with using the stupid traditional mouse
without a mousepad that I purchased an new wireless laser mouse,
which works well even on the surface of my wooden desk
and frees me from being bothered by entangled cords.
It was worth paying no less than 4,500 yen.

会社の人とボーリングをやったが, 散々なスコアだった.
玉が全く真っ直ぐ行かないのである.
ガーターの回数はNo1だったに違いない.
ここしばらくマウスより重いものを持った記憶の無い当方にとって,
ボーリングの玉はまるで漬物石のようで, 投げるというよりも
逆に振り回されているという感じだった.

かなり運動不足であることを改めて痛感し,
そのうち２足歩行ができるなくなるかもしれない,
と今本気で心配し始めている.
何かスポーツをはじめなければと思う.

I went bowling with my co-workers, but I got awful scores.
No one else must have beaten me on the number of the gutters commited.
The ball seemed like a weight stone to me,
who had hardly carried anything heavier than a mouse for a long time,
which made me feel like being thrown rather than throwing it.

I feel I don't get enough execise so strongly that
now I doubt if I can even walk on the two legs in the future.
I have to begin any sport to survive.

新宿紀伊国屋書店に足を運んで, 生まれて初めて, 英語で書かれた
小説を買ったのだが,　買う本を決めるのに思った以上に苦労した.
まず, アルファベットの索引はあったのだが, 著者のラストネーム名順に
本が並べられているということに気づくのに時間がかかった.
また, 背表紙に書かれている情報についても,
著者名とタイトルを区別するのさえややこしく感じた.
そもそも, どんな名前の人物が書いた本か認識できない者が
その内容を理解できるのか, と一抹の不安を覚えた.

そんなこんなで手に入れたアガサクリスティの「ゴルフ場殺人事件」.
実は推理ものだったら何でも良かったのだが, 冒頭から難単語続出である.
知らない単語, 知っていてもどんな意味で使われているのか
わからない単語に下線を引いていったら, 紙面が埋め尽くされてしまった.
技術書を読むのとは全く勝手が違うな, と痛感した.

I went to the Kinokuniya bookstore in Shinjuku to buy an English novel
for the 1st time, which I had difficuly deciding it.
Despite the indexes at the corner, it took a while for me
to find that the books were sorted by author's last name.
I was not so familiar with the information on the spine of an English
book that I could tell the titles from the author's names.
I wondered if someone who could't even recognize the title
was able to understand the content.

I'm working on "the murder on the links" by Agatha Christie.
(Actually any crime novels are fine with me...)
But now it is filled with a lot of underlines I drew for the words
whose meanings I wasn't sure of.
I find it difficult to read an English novel than a technological book,
where relatively easier words are only used.

ブログと同じように, Webブラウザさえあれば
どこにいてもアクセスすることができ,
ページを新規作成したり編集することができる.
自分の興味のあることは何でも覚え書きをつけて
いくつもりだが, とりあえず, 自分が今読んでいる本
「計算機プログラムの構造と解釈」について少しずつ
まとめていこうと思う.

I am beginning with "Structure and Interpretation
of Computer Programs", the book I'm reading now.

近頃, 英語で書かれている技術書を読むことが全く苦に
ならなくなってきた. むしろ, 日本語に翻訳されているものを読む方が
かえってポイントをつかみづらく, もどかしい気分にさえなる.
その主な理由としてはまず, 翻訳そのもの難しさ,
もう1つは, 技術的詳細や複雑な概念を説明するためには
日本語よりも英語の方が向いている, ことが挙げられる.

はじめに挙げた理由は比較的明らかである.
単語の意味を調べるために英和辞典でなく
英英辞典を使うのと同じで, 語彙が1対1に対応しないので
誤訳や誤解の余地が大いに生じやすい.
このことは英文和訳に限らず, あらゆる言語間の翻訳
について回ることである.

第2の理由は, 英語では, 早い段階で大きな枠組みを提示し,
後にその詳細を具体的に説明する, という事実に基づいている.
このことは, 難しい概念や主張を分かりやすく説明したり,
大きなものを設計する時の定石でもある.
プログラマが関数のインターフェースだけを先に定義し,
その具体的な実装を後回しにするのにも似ている.

英文について, 今述べた英語の発想が端的に現れる例を挙げると,
It is important that ?. (× That ? is important.)
これは仮主語と呼ばれるもので, まず初めに「何かが重要である」ことを示し,
その「何か」の具体的な説明はthat節の後で行う.
that節の中は比較的長くなりがちであるために
全体の構造が分かりにくくなるのを嫌うのである.
他の例を挙げると,
I don't think that it is true. (× I think that it isn't true)
あることについて肯定的あるいは否定的であるのかは重要な情報であり,
したがって英語では, どちらの立場にあるのかを予め明らかにしようとする.
その一方で, 日本語は最後まで読まなければ結論がわからない, というのは興味深い.

さらに, 「文」だけでなく「段落」についてもこの英語の発想は貫かれている.
英語では, 各段落の冒頭でその段落の主題とも呼ぶべきトピックセンテンスを
提示し, 段落の残りで詳細に説明したり具体例を挙げたりすることで,
トピックセンテンスを徹底的に裏付ける, という構成がかなり多い.
実は当ブログも, 英語の発想を身に付けるべく,
出来るだけこのスタイルで書こうと意識はしているのだが,
なかなか難しい. 日本人の書いた文章では, トピックセンテンスは
段落の最後に来ることが多いのではないだろうか.

さて, 世の中の技術系論文の多くが英語で書かれている,
という事実は, エンジニアにとってはありがたい事かもしれない.
仮に, 自分が日本語のネイティブスピーカーでなく, かつ
技術書のほとんどが日本語で書かれていたとしたら, 辞書を片手に
その論旨をつかむのに, 今まで以上に四苦八苦していたと思う.
現在英語が世界を席巻しているのは, 全くの偶然ではないのだろう.

While I can stand to read technological books written in English,
I feel awkward to make the points clear
when I read ones translated into Japanese.
One reason for this is the difficulty with tranlation and
another reason would be that English is a better tool than Japanese
for explaining technical details and complicated concepts.

The 1st reason is relatively obvious and the same as the one
why you should use an english dictionary, not an English-Japanese one.
Incompatible vocabulary between different languages
could cause a lot of misunderstandings and incorrect translation,
which is true of any translation between one language to another.

The 2nd reason is based on the fact that in English,
you show a large framework at first and
explain the details about it at a later time,
which is also the basic way of designing something large and complicated.
It is like that computer programmers define in advance
the interfaces of functions before they implement it.

One example sentence that shows the way of thinking in English is
"It is important that ?. (× That ? is important)",
where it is first shown that something is improtant and
what is important is explained concretely after the 'that' clause.
A 'that' clause is likely to be long, so you should avoid
it making unclear the structure of the sentence.
Another example sentence would be
"I don't think that it is true. (× I think that it isn't true)"
It is so important whether you are for or against something
that you should make it clear as soon as possible in the sentence.
On the other hand, it is interesting that in Japanese, you can't know
the conclusion until you finish the sentence till the end.

The way of writing like this is consistent in
not only sentence but also paragraph.
In English, you usually show at the begining of each paragraph
its 'topic sentence', the main theme of the paragraph,
which you support thoroughly in the rest of the paragraph
by giving sufficient explanations and concrete examples.
Actually, I have tried to write the blog in this style
so that I am familiar with the way fo thinking in English.
Most of the Japanese people would put
the topic sentence at the end of a paragraph.

By the way, I think engineers should welcome the fact that
most of the technical papers in the world are written in English.
If you were not a native speaker of Japanese and
most of the technological books were written in Japanese,
you would have much more trouble understanding them with a dictionary.
It's no accident that English established its position as the common language.

先週, 帰宅途中で雨に降られてしまったので, やむなく
コンビニエンスストアに駆け込んで買った500円の傘である.
しかし今日, 会社を出て傘を広げようとした瞬間,
なんと強風一発で, 再起不能なまでに壊れてしまった.
こんなに脆い傘は生まれて初めてだ.

Since it began to rain on my way home last week,
I had to run fast into a convenient store to buy a cheap umbrella.
But today when I left my office and tried to open it,
just a strong puff of wind smashed it.
I have never had such a fragile umbrella,

ついに当方は, ドラムセットを手に入れることを決意した.
どのメーカーのどの製品を買うかまではまだ決めていないが,
近所の住民に迷惑をかけるわけにはいかないので,
静音の電子ドラムにすることだけは間違いない.

元々, ドラムの練習をするために必ずしもフルセットが
手元に無ければならない, というわけではない.
楽曲のリズムパターンの練習だけならば,
両手両足を使ってシミュレーションすることは可能だし,
実際にスティックを使った練習をするにしても,
安物のゴムパッド1枚の上で出来ることは沢山ある.

しかしそんな練習も, 最終的にはドラムセット上で
再現するためのものであって, 時々はスタジオに行って
楽曲の仕上げをしたくなる...というか,
やはり, 本物を叩きたい.
休日にドラムセットを使いたいと思うと,
自宅近くに手頃なスタジオが無いので,
電車に乗って出かけなければならず, 金も手間もかかる.

はっきり言って, 当方のドラムは下手の横好きであるが,
そこそこ長く続けたので, そろそろフルセットを入手しても
罰が当たらないだろう. それなりの製品は値も張るだろうが,
半年くらい使えば, 元はとれるだろうと思っている.

I made up my mind to get a drum kit.
Though I haven't decide on what product to buy yet,
I need an electronic one so that I would avoid
bothering my neighbors.

You don't always have to use the drum kit to practice drumming.
You can simulate by hand rhythm patterns of a tune and
you can do a lot on a cheap rubber pad to
practice controlling sticks.

But even so, they are ultimately for practicing on an actuall drum set
and you would want to go to a studio to play on it.
Since in my case, there are no studios near my home,
I have to go out of town by train
when I want to use a drum kit on weekends,
which costs me some money and time.

Although I am not a good drummer, it is the right time to get a drum set
because more than 2 years has passed since I began to play drums.
I think it will pay even if I use an expensive one about half a year.
