近頃, 本屋でジャズを耳にする機会が多い.
実際にはずっと前から, 街の色々なところで
ジャズは流れていたのだけれど,
当方がドラムを始めて時が経つうちに,
ジャズドラムの音に自然と耳が行くようになったのだろう.
つまり, 変わったのは人々の流行ではなく, 当方の耳である.

正直言って, ジャズのことはさっぱり分からないが,
たまたま耳にする限りでは, ドラムソロがあまり見られない
ポップス/ロック系と比較して, ドラムの存在感がかなり大きく感じられる.
もちろん伴奏としてのリズムキープは必要不可欠だろうが,
ジャズのドラムソロは流暢かつ自己主張が強く,
リード楽器並の役割を果たすこともある...ように思われる.

また, 大抵のジャズドラマーのスティックの持ち方は視覚的に
一種独特である. マーチングバンドの影響によるものらしいが,
トラディショナルグリップと呼ばれるもので,
左手のスティックだけ逆手に持つため, 右手左手で非対称になる.
ジャンルによってスティックをこう持たなければならない,
という決まりごとは全く無いのだが, Youtube等の動画サイトで
古い時代のジャズドラマーがトラディショナルグリップで
演奏しているのを見ると, 職人の味が出ていてすごく憧れる.

当方もいつかは, トラディショナルグリップで
かっこいいドラムソロを叩けるようになりたいものだ.

These days I often hear Jazz in a bookstore.
Actually you can hear jazz music everywhere in the street for a long time and
it's just that I came to pay attention automatically to the sound of jazz drums
since I began to play drums 2 years ago.
It is not people's preference but my ears  that has changed.

To be honest, I know almost nothing about jazz music.
But I think a drums player has a dominating presense in jazz
compared to pops and rock music, where drum solos are not so common,
as far as I happen to listen to jazz music.
In addition to an important role of drums as rhythm-keeper,
its solos in jazz are fluent and assertive,
sometimes making drums a lead instrument.

The way of jazz drummers gripping their sticks is
called traditional grip and visually unique.
They have the left stick in a different way from the right one, asymmetrically.
Though there are no rules on appropriate gripping,
I am so excited when I watch the videos on youtube
where jazz professionals in the old days play with traditional grip.

I hope I play cool drum solos with traditional grip someday.

今月頭に購入したiPod nanoだが, もう既にほとんど使っていない.
近頃, イヤフォン(ヘッドフォン)を使って音楽を聴くのは,
耳に非常に良くないと思い始めたからだ.
通行人の多い雑踏で使うことが多いので,
必然的に音量が大きくなりがちになり, なおさらである.

The Whoという, その全盛期に世界最大級の音量で
ライブ演奏をしていたことで有名な英国のバンドが
いるのだが, つい先日も, そのギタリスト, ピートタウンゼントが
彼自身の難聴について語っているインタビュー記事を見つけた.
彼曰く, 「自分の難聴はライブ演奏のせいではない. スタジオ内でいつも,
イヤフォンをつけて大音量の音楽を耳に流し込んでいたからだ.」
大きなお世話だが, 電車内で数メートル離れていても聞こえてくる位
やかましい騒音をイヤフォンから漏らしている若者たちは将来,
難聴に悩まされる可能性が高い, ということだろうか.

というわけで当方は, iPodとおさらばして
ヒマな通勤途中は読書に勤しむことにした.

These days I hardly use my iPod nano
which I just bought at the beginning of this month,
because I came to think that listening to music
with earphones is bad for my ears, especially when
I have to turn up the volume on the busy street.

The other day I found an article where
Pete Townshend talked about his hearing loss.
He is the guitarist of the Who, a British rock band
well known for its noisiest live performance
in the world at its peak.
He told on the article that his problem is not for their noisy
live performace but for his habit of listening to music
with earphones in a studio.
Would it mean that young people with noisy headphones
on the train are much more likely to be annoyed
with their hearing losses in the future?

That is why I said goodbye to the portable music player
to devote myself to my books on the train on my way to office.

実はこれまで, ハッカーらしいことを何1つ書いていなかったので,
今回は, ハッカーの商売道具であるプログラミング言語について
少しばかり書いてみることにする.
当方は, 先日読み終えたポールグレアム氏(著名なLispハッカー)
の著書「ハッカーと画家」に触発されて,
Lispを本格的に勉強してみよう, と思い立った.

Lispはたいへんユニークなプログラミング言語なのだが,
まず, Lispで書かれたコードを一見して気付くことは,
大量の括弧で埋め尽くされていることだ.
その異様な風貌ゆえに, 多くのプログラマから食わず嫌いをされて
疎んじられることも多い一方で,　
熱狂的な信者は, Lispが最も柔軟かつ強力なプログラミング言語で,
圧倒的な可能性を秘めていると信じている.
プログラミング言語界の山下清といったところか.
...ちょっと違うか.

そして, C, C++, Javaなど世の中で広く使われている言語の
ほとんどが「手続き型」というカテゴリに属するのに対して,
Lispは「関数型」というカテゴリに属する.
より正確には, Lispで「手続き型」プログラミングを行うことは可能だが,
少なくとも, 「関数型」プログラミング向けにデザインされている.
「手続き型」と「関数型」の違いをプログラムを書いた経験の無い人に
説明するのは難しいが, 単に道具の違いというだけでなく,
使うプログラマの思考方法にさえ, 明確な違いが出てくる.
洋式便所と和式便所ほど違う...と言ってしまうと,
使う人間の好みの問題?, あるいは, プログラムってウンコ?
とか誤解を受けそうだが, 決してそんなことは無い.
学生時代に他の関数型言語を使った経験のある当方は,
「関数型」プログラミングでアプリケーションを書くことには,
いくつかの確かな優位性がある, と信じている.

さらに, Lispには他のプログラミング言語と一線を画す
マクロ(C言語のマクロとは全く異なる)という機能があって,
LispをLispたらしめているもの...らしいが,
当方が, マクロの素晴らしさを説明できるほどになるには,
まだまだ勉強が足りない.

Lispの何に魅力を感じているのかと問われると,
今のところ, 具体的に説明するのは難しい.
素晴らしいプログラマが, 必ずしも良いプログラミング言語を
使っているかどうかは良く知らないが, しかし, 少なくとも,
当方にとっての良いプログラミング言語とは,
プログラミングしていて楽しいものであり,
過程を楽しめなければ良いものを作れないだろうとは思う.
そしてLispには,　その楽しい「何か」がありそうな気がする.

Since I have never written on the blog anything that a hacker would do,
I'll write something about a programming language as a tool for us today.
Now I'm thinking about studying Lisp, one of programming languages,
inspired by "Hackers and Painters" written by Paul Graham,
a famous Lisp hacker.

Lisp is such a unique language.
The first thing you will find when you look at source codes writen in Lisp
is that they are filled with a lot of parentheses,
for which some programmers would hate to even read it.
On the other hand, enthusiastic Lispers believe that Lisp is
the most flexible and powerful language with great potential,
which could be compared to Kiyoshi Yamashita,
a famous Japanese artist known for his weird look.

While the most common languages like C, C++ and Java
belong to procedural programming language,
Lisp belongs to functional programming language.
To be exact, you can write codes in Lisp in "procedural" style.
But Lisp is originally designed to encourage you to do in "functional" style.
Although it is hard to explain to people unfamiliar with programming,
they are so different like a Western-style and squat toilet
that it even have a impact on programmer's ways of thinking.
...You might think which one you choose depends on your preference.
But actually I have used another functional language when I was a student
and I can see some definite advantages to writing applications
in functional languages.

I heard Lisp has a facility called "Macro",
which makes Lisp totally different from any other languages.
But It will take a long time until I come to master "Macro"
to explain how wonderful it is.

It is difficult for me to tell what makes me interested in Lisp now.
Although I don't know if competant programmers use good programming languages,
at least for me, it means one that gives me great joy in programming with it
and you couldn't make good software unless you enjoy the process.
I believe there must be something like that about Lisp.

当方の飼っている猫は先月で満10才を迎えたが,
人間でいうともう56才に相当するらしい.
そういえば最近, 動きにキレが無くなってきて,
オモチャへの食いつきも良くないような気もするが,
ぜひ元気に長生きしてほしいものである.

Last month my cat turned 10, equivalent to a 56 year-old-woman.
Though these days she seems to be less active than before,
I hope she will live a long, healthy, and happy life.

当方はついに, 24時間稼動するサーバ専用機を手に入れた.
何とかしてVAIOを活かす方法を模索していたのだが,
さすがに, ディスプレイに触れるだけで
フリーズするのには我慢ならなかった. 老兵は去るのみ.
結局, Yahooオークションで中古のThinkpadを
34,500円で落札してしまった.

実は, Yahooオークションを利用するのは今回が初めてで,
落札にはかなり慎重になったし, 最悪の場合,
箸にも棒にもかからぬポンコツを掴まされるかも
しれないことを覚悟していた.

しかし実際には, 予想以上の良品かつ美品が届いた.
VMware上で動作するサーバとしても十分な性能を持っているし,
キーボードが洗練されていて操作しやすい.
また, 2, 3日つけっぱなしにしていても
特に問題は無く, 本体が極端に熱くなることも無かった.

Finally I have gotten a new machine working as a server around the clock.
I tried to find a way to make the best of the VAIO in vain,
because I can't stand just a touch of its display making it frozen.
At last I made a successful bid of 34,500 yen
for a second-hand Thinkpad at Yahoo auction.

Since this was the first time I used the Internet auction site,
I was so nervous about winning a bit that
I even worried that I would be provided with a shoddy good.

But actually it was a better and more beautifull one
than I had thought that I received.
It has a good performance enough to work a server
on the VMware, with a sophisticated keybord.
There has been no problem so far although
it has continued to work for a few days.

英単語の意味を調べる時, 特に英作文を書く場合は,
英英辞典が欠かせない. 恥ずかしい話だが,
当方はごく最近になるまで
もっぱら英和辞典ばかり使っていた.

英和辞典だけを使い続けていると, どうも
英単語を使うべき文脈に対して
意識を向けなくなりがちだ.
近い意味を持っている単語でも,
使われる状況がはっきり異なる場合がある.
例えば, 辞書で単語の意味を調べる場合には「look up」
組織的に事実関係を明らかにする場合には「investigate」

ずっと前, 当方がまだソニーを信じていた時代に買ったVAIOを
サーバ機として使用すべく, 起動してみた.
しかし, キーボードのy, u, k, 0が全く効かない.
何もこぼした覚えは無いのに, 一体どうして
こんな壊れ方になるのだろうか.

新しくUSBキーボードを買ってきて,
ノートPCにつないで代用するのは, かなりブサイクだ.
かといって, 直接入力できない文字をWEBで検索し,
テキストファイルに保存するなどして,
いちいちコピーするのも, あまりに不毛すぎる.

これだけで, 既に戦意喪失してしまったが,
せめて, VMwareをVAIOにインストールして,
既に構築したpure-and-easy.comを引越しできる
ところまで確認したい. そのためには,
メインPC上で作成した仮想マシン(ゲストLinuxのデータ)を
外付けHDD等を介してVAIOにコピーするだけで済む...

つい先週, 産声を上げたばかりのこのブログに対して,
早くも熱心なファンよりメールをいただき,
ぜひ稼働率をもっと上げてほしい, と叱咤激励を受けた.

それもそのはず, 基本的に平日は, 当方が帰宅して寝るまでの間しか,
サーバを立ち上げていないのだから...
会社のPCをつけたまま退社することはあっても,
汗水流して働いた金で買った自分のPCを
24時間電源ONにするのには, ためらいを感じるのである. 　

しかし, そうはいっても, このブログを楽しみにしている読者たちの
期待を裏切るわけには行くまい. とりあえず, 引退したVAIOを
棺桶から引きずり出して, サーバ専用マシンとして
最期の奉公をさせてやろうと思う.

I am surprised to have received an email so soon
from a devoted fan who expects this website,
which just started to run last week, to be more available.

No wonder you so often fail to access to the blog on weekdays,
because the server usually works after I get home until I go to bed.
Although I often leave my office with the PC on,
I hesitate to keep my desktop PC I bought with the money I worked hard for
on around the clock.

Nevertheless, I should make a full effort to meet the expectations
of the people looking forward to visiting here.
At least, I'm going to to make sure if my VAIO,
the notebook computer sleeping in the drawer, could work as a server.

VMWareという素敵なソフトウェアがあって,
無償でダウンロードできるのだが,
あるOS上で別のOSを動作させることができる.
例えば, 物理的に1台のPC上でWindowとLinuxを同時に
実行することが可能だ.

何を隠そう, このpure-and-easy.comも
Windows用のVMWare上で走るLinuxサーバなのである.

午前中, 家の近くにある場末の電気店に立ち寄ってみた.
シャッターが半分下りていて, とても営業しているようには見えなかったが,
店頭に立つとドアが開いて, 暗がりの奥から店主が挨拶したので,
ちょっとビックリした. 帰宅後は, さっそく買ってきた乾電池と白熱灯で,
部屋を新調した. 止まっていたアナログ時計が動くようになったし,
夜になればきっと, 明るくなった部屋に感動することだろう.
久しぶりに文明を取り戻した気分である.

In the morning I dropped by an desolate electric store,
which didn't seem to be open with one of the shutters closed.
But when I stood by the store, the door suddenly opened and
the storekeeper greeted me from in the dark, so I was a little surprised.
Soon after I got home, I updated my room
with the battery and bulbs I had just bought.
The analog clock started to work again and
I must be moved with the bright room tonight.
I feel as if I regained the civilization after a long time.

iPod nanoを買ってしまった.
あまりに薄く小さいので, 財布の中に収まってしまう.
上着のポケットに入れても, ほとんど重量を意識しなくていいのは嬉しい.
間違って一緒に洗濯してしまわないか心配になるが.

The other day I bought an iPod nano,
which is so small and thin that you can put it in your warret.
I'm glad that I can enjoy listening to music
without being conscious of its weight when I have it in the pocket of my jacket,
though I worry that I would wash it together with the clothes by mistake.
