I have been so bored with practicing drums alone that I am desperate for working people who will make a band with me to play music once a month. That is why I apply for a drummer several times on the internet, I have almost never gotton responses even after more than a week has passed. Even if I got a reply, we got out of touch while communicating about the detail and we can't even call or meet to talk to.
Though I don't know it takes them to find and reply to applications or they just ignore it when they don't like the applications, at least I want them to mail me as soon as possible when they decline my applications. There might be too many applications for them to reply to. But it seemed that some people recruit again and again here and there on the internet.
I've been so busy for the last 2 or 3 weeks that I sometimes take the last trains to get home. And since I have to leave home early in the morning, I can't get enough sleep and am tired all the time.
Yesterday I, who is dilligent to go to work in the middle of 3 days off in a row, dropped by the massagge store near my office on my way home. The staffs are all Chinese and I know most of them have good skills since I've been there several times. Although I have always taken a short course for 20 or 30 minutes, I decided to pay as much as 6,000 yen to take a full massage. But this is my major fault.
Now I guess the staff assigned to me was nothing other than an amateur, because she wasn't so good that I felt comfortable. Plus, the room was hot like sauna, though I heard the air-conditioning work. Gradually, I even began to hope the massage would be finished soon. ]]>

I visited a music store to buy an amplifier for guitar, Though there were a lot of products, I was not so familier with them that I could recognize the differences. When I stood thinking about which one to get, a clerk came to help me, who said he has played guitar for 7 years. He was so courteous that he explained to me from how to use an amplifier to their difference. Finally I decided to purchase the product that he also use at his home. I wondered if a buyer could like a product that the seller wouldn't want to use? This idea reminded me of rich Chinese who never eat the toxic vegetable of their own country.
When I strum on the guitar connected to the amplifier at home, I heard a good sound, the very one I believe of electric guitar, which was worth having carried the heavy object for a long distance. I also found I can use it for a speaker for electric drums. I'd call it a good bargain.]]>

小説を買ったのだが, 買う本を決めるのに思った以上に苦労した. まず, アルファベットの索引はあったのだが, 著者のラストネーム名順に 本が並べられているということに気づくのに時間がかかった. また, 背表紙に書かれている情報についても, 著者名とタイトルを区別するのさえややこしく感じた. そもそも, どんな名前の人物が書いた本か認識できない者が その内容を理解できるのか, と一抹の不安を覚えた.
I went to the Kinokuniya bookstore in Shinjuku to buy an English novel for the 1st time, which I had difficuly deciding it. Despite the indexes at the corner, it took a while for me to find that the books were sorted by author's last name. I was not so familiar with the information on the spine of an English book that I could tell the titles from the author's names. I wondered if someone who could't even recognize the title was able to understand the content.
I'm working on "the murder on the links" by Agatha Christie. (Actually any crime novels are fine with me...) But now it is filled with a lot of underlines I drew for the words whose meanings I wasn't sure of. I find it difficult to read an English novel than a technological book, where relatively easier words are only used. ]]>

ならなくなってきた. むしろ, 日本語に翻訳されているものを読む方が かえってポイントをつかみづらく, もどかしい気分にさえなる. その主な理由としてはまず, 翻訳そのもの難しさ, もう1つは, 技術的詳細や複雑な概念を説明するためには 日本語よりも英語の方が向いている, ことが挙げられる.
英文について, 今述べた英語の発想が端的に現れる例を挙げると, It is important that ?. (× That ? is important.) これは仮主語と呼ばれるもので, まず初めに「何かが重要である」ことを示し, その「何か」の具体的な説明はthat節の後で行う. that節の中は比較的長くなりがちであるために 全体の構造が分かりにくくなるのを嫌うのである. 他の例を挙げると, I don't think that it is true. (× I think that it isn't true) あることについて肯定的あるいは否定的であるのかは重要な情報であり, したがって英語では, どちらの立場にあるのかを予め明らかにしようとする. その一方で, 日本語は最後まで読まなければ結論がわからない, というのは興味深い.
While I can stand to read technological books written in English, I feel awkward to make the points clear when I read ones translated into Japanese. One reason for this is the difficulty with tranlation and another reason would be that English is a better tool than Japanese for explaining technical details and complicated concepts.
The 1st reason is relatively obvious and the same as the one why you should use an english dictionary, not an English-Japanese one. Incompatible vocabulary between different languages could cause a lot of misunderstandings and incorrect translation, which is true of any translation between one language to another.
The 2nd reason is based on the fact that in English, you show a large framework at first and explain the details about it at a later time, which is also the basic way of designing something large and complicated. It is like that computer programmers define in advance the interfaces of functions before they implement it.
One example sentence that shows the way of thinking in English is "It is important that ?. (× That ? is important)", where it is first shown that something is improtant and what is important is explained concretely after the 'that' clause. A 'that' clause is likely to be long, so you should avoid it making unclear the structure of the sentence. Another example sentence would be "I don't think that it is true. (× I think that it isn't true)" It is so important whether you are for or against something that you should make it clear as soon as possible in the sentence. On the other hand, it is interesting that in Japanese, you can't know the conclusion until you finish the sentence till the end.
The way of writing like this is consistent in not only sentence but also paragraph. In English, you usually show at the begining of each paragraph its 'topic sentence', the main theme of the paragraph, which you support thoroughly in the rest of the paragraph by giving sufficient explanations and concrete examples. Actually, I have tried to write the blog in this style so that I am familiar with the way fo thinking in English. Most of the Japanese people would put the topic sentence at the end of a paragraph.
By the way, I think engineers should welcome the fact that most of the technical papers in the world are written in English. If you were not a native speaker of Japanese and most of the technological books were written in Japanese, you would have much more trouble understanding them with a dictionary. It's no accident that English established its position as the common language. ]]>

どのメーカーのどの製品を買うかまではまだ決めていないが, 近所の住民に迷惑をかけるわけにはいかないので, 静音の電子ドラムにすることだけは間違いない.
I made up my mind to get a drum kit. Though I haven't decide on what product to buy yet, I need an electronic one so that I would avoid bothering my neighbors.
You don't always have to use the drum kit to practice drumming. You can simulate by hand rhythm patterns of a tune and you can do a lot on a cheap rubber pad to practice controlling sticks.
But even so, they are ultimately for practicing on an actuall drum set and you would want to go to a studio to play on it. Since in my case, there are no studios near my home, I have to go out of town by train when I want to use a drum kit on weekends, which costs me some money and time.
Although I am not a good drummer, it is the right time to get a drum set because more than 2 years has passed since I began to play drums. I think it will pay even if I use an expensive one about half a year. ]]>

実際にはずっと前から, 街の色々なところで ジャズは流れていたのだけれど, 当方がドラムを始めて時が経つうちに, ジャズドラムの音に自然と耳が行くようになったのだろう. つまり, 変わったのは人々の流行ではなく, 当方の耳である.
These days I often hear Jazz in a bookstore. Actually you can hear jazz music everywhere in the street for a long time and it's just that I came to pay attention automatically to the sound of jazz drums since I began to play drums 2 years ago. It is not people's preference but my ears that has changed.
To be honest, I know almost nothing about jazz music. But I think a drums player has a dominating presense in jazz compared to pops and rock music, where drum solos are not so common, as far as I happen to listen to jazz music. In addition to an important role of drums as rhythm-keeper, its solos in jazz are fluent and assertive, sometimes making drums a lead instrument.
The way of jazz drummers gripping their sticks is called traditional grip and visually unique. They have the left stick in a different way from the right one, asymmetrically. Though there are no rules on appropriate gripping, I am so excited when I watch the videos on youtube where jazz professionals in the old days play with traditional grip.
I hope I play cool drum solos with traditional grip someday. ]]>

These days I hardly use my iPod nano which I just bought at the beginning of this month, because I came to think that listening to music with earphones is bad for my ears, especially when I have to turn up the volume on the busy street.
The other day I found an article where Pete Townshend talked about his hearing loss. He is the guitarist of the Who, a British rock band well known for its noisiest live performance in the world at its peak. He told on the article that his problem is not for their noisy live performace but for his habit of listening to music with earphones in a studio. Would it mean that young people with noisy headphones on the train are much more likely to be annoyed with their hearing losses in the future?
That is why I said goodbye to the portable music player to devote myself to my books on the train on my way to office. ]]>

実はこれまで, ハッカーらしいことを何1つ書いていなかったので, 今回は, ハッカーの商売道具であるプログラミング言語について 少しばかり書いてみることにする. 当方は, 先日読み終えたポールグレアム氏(著名なLispハッカー) の著書「ハッカーと画家」に触発されて, Lispを本格的に勉強してみよう, と思い立った.
Since I have never written on the blog anything that a hacker would do, I'll write something about a programming language as a tool for us today. Now I'm thinking about studying Lisp, one of programming languages,
inspired by "Hackers and Painters" written by Paul Graham, a famous Lisp hacker.
Lisp is such a unique language. The first thing you will find when you look at source codes writen in Lisp is that they are filled with a lot of parentheses,
for which some programmers would hate to even read it. On the other hand, enthusiastic Lispers believe that Lisp is the most flexible and powerful language with great potential, which could be compared to Kiyoshi Yamashita,
a famous Japanese artist known for his weird look.
While the most common languages like C, C++ and Java belong to procedural programming language, Lisp belongs to functional programming language. To be exact, you can write codes in Lisp in "procedural" style.
But Lisp is originally designed to encourage you to do in "functional" style. Although it is hard to explain to people unfamiliar with programming, they are so different like a Western-style and squat toilet
that it even have a impact on programmer's ways of thinking. ...You might think which one you choose depends on your preference. But actually I have used another functional language when I was a student and I can see some definite advantages to writing applications in functional languages.
I heard Lisp has a facility called "Macro", which makes Lisp totally different from any other languages. But It will take a long time until I come to master "Macro" to explain how wonderful it is.
It is difficult for me to tell what makes me interested in Lisp now. Although I don't know if competant programmers use good programming languages, at least for me, it means one that gives me great joy in programming with it
and you couldn't make good software unless you enjoy the process. I believe there must be something like that about Lisp. ]]>
